Accommodation and transportation

Unfortunately, Ryanair has discontinued its routes from Billund to Malta from April 1st 2025, so alternative options will need to be considered. We know that airlines such as SAS, Norwegian, and Lufthansa operate flights from Copenhagen and Germany, though a layover will be required. We hope that another airline will step in and offer direct flights from Billund to Malta, but as of now, we do not have any information on this.

Accommodation Suggestions

When planning your stay in Malta, we recommend two key areas: Mellieha or

St. Julian's. Each location offers unique advantages, and depending on your preferences, one may suit your needs better than the other.

For those planning a longer stay, we recommend booking a hotel with breakfast included to make your mornings easy and convenient or renting an Airbnb, allowing for more space and the ability to cook your own meals.

Mellieha

St. Julian's

For those seeking a more relaxed and tranquil experience, Mellieha is an excellent choice. Located in the northern part of Malta, this charming town offers a peaceful atmosphere with stunning natural beauty. Known for its picturesque beaches, Mellieha Bay is one of the largest and most popular on the island, offering golden sand and clear waters, perfect for swimming and sunbathing.

This area is particularly recommended for older guests or those seeking a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of more tourist-centric areas like St. Julian’s or Sliema.

In addition to its beaches, Mellieha boasts a variety of outdoor activities, including scenic walks, hiking trails, and access to the nearby Għadira Nature Reserve, where nature lovers can enjoy Malta's diverse flora and fauna. The town itself is quaint and welcoming, offering a combination of traditional Maltese architecture, local shops, and cafes where you can unwind and enjoy authentic Maltese delicacies.

For something particularly special, we recommend considering a stay at the Mellieha Holiday Centre, also known as "The Danish Village." This charming complex offers cozy bungalows with a village-like feel, perfect for those looking for a more immersive and tranquil environment. The center offers a relaxed vibe, making it an ideal choice for guests who prefer a quieter setting.

If you're looking for a more vibrant and energetic experience, St. Julian's or Sliema is the place to be. Known for its bustling nightlife, waterfront restaurants, and entertainment options, these areas are perfect for guests who want to immerse themselves in Malta’s lively social scene.

St. Julian's and Sliema are centrally located, just a short distance from the capital city, Valletta, making it an ideal spot for those who want to explore the island's rich history and culture. However, if you choose St. Julian's, be mindful not to book too close to Paceville, as it can be quite noisy in the evenings due to the nightlife.

After living in the area, we’ve discovered some fantastic dining spots to share with you: Pitch Lounge for delicious pizzas, Aqualuna for great burgers and pasta, and Asian Kingdom for all-you-can-eat (sushi and delicious dishes). For ice cream, don’t miss Sottozero in Sliema, offering flavors like Kinder and cakes, or Rivareno in St. Julian’s, known for its homemade, unique ice cream.

The area offers a range of accommodations, from luxury to budget-friendly options, and is well-connected by public transport, making it an excellent base for exploring Malta. However, be aware that the beaches here aren’t the best for tourists, mostly consisting of rocky cliffs and artificial "gravel" beaches.

No matter where you choose to stay, Malta offers many ways to quickly and affordably get around the island with good bus connections or cheap Bolt rides.

Transportation options

We recommend using Bolt (app), a cheap taxi service on the island, to get around. Additionally, buses are a popular and budget-friendly option, especially for longer rides. A bus ticket costs just €2.50 and is valid for up to two hours, allowing you to travel anywhere on the island. You can pay with either cash or a contactless payment card. BUT buses in Malta can be a bit unpredictable. They might arrive early, late, or sometimes not at all. However, if you're staying in a big city, there are usually several bus routes to choose from.

Driving here is on the left-hand side of the road, and the traffic can often be quite chaotic, so we wouldn’t advise renting a car.
